Working with homeless families in Sussex County, Sister Tomasina has helped to bring hope and purpose to those that are often forgotten. The Samaritan Inn is a nonprofit organization which has been serving Sussex County since 1977. They provide housing, food banks and education for activities of daily living of homeless families. Their goal is rehabilitation. They strive to send individuals and families back to the community with the ability to live and work independently. The program's inception, due in large part to the dedicated efforts of Sister Thomasina Gebhard of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, helped to alleviate the impoverishment caused by the economy and the forced closing of farms in Sussex County. Today with the increase in unemployment the Inn serves as a place a family can live in safety, dignity, and comfort, until they can support themselves once again.
